When a reply is not a reply...

When you reply to someone's tweet, that tweet does not normally appear in your timeline. But here's a trick: just add a period or some other character before the first @ of the tweet, and your reply will appear in your timeline. [next]

The example above shows another nifty Twitter feature: for lots of links, like links to New Yorker articles, there is an automatic "summary" that appears. I didn't add that image; the people at the New Yorker have a deal with Twitter to make that happen.
