In a later post, I'll say something about Storify, which is a great tool for curating Twitter conversations manually.
True confession: I still find it difficult to have substantive conversations in Twitter. It will happen every once in a while, but it's very constrained by topic, and I also find it very hard to have a good back-and-forth disagreement with someone at Twitter. For me, conversations work so much better at Google+. When you click on a Google+ post time/date stamp, you get a conversation page that might look like this:
